Alex GC supplied and installed the windows and doors on a new multi-story residential building at 1526 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx. The work covers both sides of the building: large black-framed windows and balcony doors on the brick street front, and windows on every floor of the rear wall, with glazed doors and full-height glass opening to the terrace at the bottom.
The front of the building is brick in two colors, with a stack of balconies up the middle. Each apartment has a large window divided into a fixed light with smaller panes beside and below it, and the balcony apartments have a glazed door onto the balcony. The black frames are repeated at the same size and position on every floor, which gives the facade its regular grid.
The rear wall is finished in gray stucco, with three columns of black windows running the height of the building. At terrace level the openings are taller: floor-to-ceiling fixed glass with a swing door beside it, so the lowest apartments open directly onto the outdoor space. The close photograph shows one of these units from the terrace, with the door open and the protective labels still on the glass.
On new construction the windows are ordered from the architect's drawings and checked against the openings as the structure goes up, then installed floor by floor so the building can be closed to the weather and the interior trades can start. Each frame is anchored into its opening and sealed to the wall's weather barrier before the brick or stucco is finished around it.
