A sliding glass shower door with a soft-close mechanism for a bathroom in Borough Park, Brooklyn. The shower runs the width of the room, with a chevron marble mosaic on the valve wall and large gray tile on the others. The opening is closed by one fixed glass panel and one sliding door, carried on a polished bar that spans from wall to wall.
On an ordinary sliding shower door, the glass runs until it meets the stop, and a hard push ends in a knock. A soft-close door has a damper built into the track hardware. Near the end of its travel the damper catches the door, slows it, and draws it gently the last few inches to the closed position. The same happens at the open end.
The benefit is practical. A heavy panel of glass is never slammed against its stops, the rollers and fittings are spared the shock, fingers are safer, and the door always finishes fully closed, so water stays in the shower. The video shows the door being pushed and the mechanism taking over at the end.
The fixed panel stands on the curb at the valve side and is clamped to the wall and to the bar. The door hangs from the bar on rollers and slides in front of the fixed panel to open, so nothing swings into the room; in a bathroom where the toilet sits next to the shower, that is the reason to choose a slider. A small guide at the curb keeps the bottom of the door in line. The bar, rollers and the square pull handle are polished, matching the chrome shower fittings.
