Scope of Work

A frameless shower enclosure in extra clear glass for the bathroom of an apartment in Lenox Hill, Manhattan. The bathroom is finished in gray marble on the floor and walls, with a herringbone pattern inside the shower. The enclosure is a corner layout: a fixed glass panel standing on the marble shower bench in front of the window, a return panel, and a hinged glass door.

Why Extra Clear Glass

Ordinary clear glass has a green tint that comes from the iron in it, and the tint is strongest at the edges and where panels overlap. Extra clear glass, also called low-iron glass, has most of that iron removed. The result is a panel that is close to colorless, so the stone behind it keeps its true color. In a bathroom lined in gray and white marble that matters: with standard glass the marble seen through the enclosure would take on a green cast; with extra clear glass it looks the same inside the shower as outside it. More on our low-iron glass page.

Glass Cut to the Bench

The shower has a built-in marble bench that runs under the window and out past the line of the enclosure. The fixed panel is cut to follow it, standing on top of the bench, while the door beside it runs down to the curb. Glass for a layout like this is made from a template of the finished stone, so that the panel edges meet the marble evenly.

Minimal Hardware

There is no frame around the glass. The panels are held by small clamps at the wall, and the corner where the two fixed panels meet is steadied by a single fitting at the ceiling. The door swings on wall-mounted hinges and has a pull handle. Keeping the metal to these few pieces leaves the marble and the view from the window uninterrupted.
