Installation includes sealing and flashing the perimeter of the opening, because a window is only as watertight as the junction between it and the building. Where an opening needs more than that — a failed sill, damaged masonry, a detail that was wrong to begin with — see waterproofing.
In a framed assembly the frame carries the load and the glass fills the hole. In a frameless system that is reversed: the glass is the structural element and the fittings simply connect it to the building. Everything that follows comes from that inversion.
Every hole, notch, cut-out and edge finish must be completed before the glass is tempered. Patch positions, spider bolt holes, standoff penetrations, lock preparation, handle holes — all of it.
A tempered panel cannot be drilled, trimmed or adjusted. If a fitting position is out by a quarter of an inch, the panel is scrap and the lead time starts again. This is the reason frameless work is set out from a site template rather than from drawings, and the reason the hardware has to be chosen before the glass is ordered rather than at installation.
People assume panel thickness is chosen for strength. Usually it is chosen for deflection — how much the panel flexes under load.
A door that flexes as it swings feels wrong and stops sealing. A partition that moves when someone leans on it feels unsafe even when it is entirely adequate structurally. So 1/2″ is the working minimum for most frameless work and 3/4″ is used for tall or wide panels, heavy use, and anywhere the panel is doing structural work.
Patch fittings clamp the glass at corners and house the pivot on doors. The standard for frameless entrances.
Spider brackets bolt through drilled holes at the panel corners, typically supporting several panels from one casting. Used on facades and atria.
Standoffs hold the glass clear of a wall or fascia through drilled holes. Common on balustrades and signage panels.
Base shoe clamps the panel into a continuous channel at the floor, which is how most frameless balustrades are set — see our railings page for the load requirements that apply.
All of these want stainless, and 316 rather than 304 anywhere exposed or coastal.
Monolithic tempered glass fails completely. For a partition in an office that is a mess. For a balustrade at height, a canopy over a pavement or a structural fin, it is a failure of the thing the glass was there to do.
Anywhere the panel is a guard, is overhead, or is carrying load, the specification is laminated — frequently with an ionoplast interlayer for post-breakage capacity — and heat soaked to screen out nickel sulphide inclusions.
A large clear frameless panel in a circulation route needs to be made visible — a manifestation band, applied frit, etched detail or a graphic. This is a genuine safety requirement and it is routinely left out of a specification and added after someone walks into it. Better to design it in, where it can look deliberate.

Office fit-outs — Tribeca, SoHo, Midtown, Boerum Hill, Downtown Brooklyn. Partitions and office fronts, where the point is to divide space without dividing light. Low-iron glass matters here because a partition presents its full height as an exposed vertical edge.
Retail and hospitality — SoHo, Madison Avenue, Williamsburg, Cedarhurst. Entrances and vestibules where the glass is the shopfront. Heavy traffic means patch and closer specification matter more than appearance.
Balustrades and canopies — Long Island City, Downtown Brooklyn, Hudson Yards. Structural work at height, where laminated and heat-soaked is the specification and the engineer's figures govern.
