Installation includes sealing and flashing the perimeter of the opening, because a window is only as watertight as the junction between it and the building. Where an opening needs more than that — a failed sill, damaged masonry, a detail that was wrong to begin with — see waterproofing.
SGP — an ionoplast interlayer — is the structural alternative to PVB. It is very much stiffer, it holds that stiffness at elevated temperature, and it is far more tolerant of moisture at an exposed edge.
Those three properties define exactly where it belongs and, just as usefully, where it does not.
In a PVB laminate, the two glass plies slide against each other slightly under load because the interlayer shears. In an SGP laminate they behave much more like a single thick pane, so the assembly carries more load for the same thickness — or achieves the same capacity in a thinner build.
The more important property is what happens after a break. An SGP laminate retains meaningful structural capacity with the glass cracked, holding shape rather than sagging. For a guard, a canopy or a structural fin, that is the difference between a broken panel and a failed barrier.
PVB absorbs moisture and can delaminate at an edge left permanently wet, showing as a milky haze creeping inward. SGP resists this far better, which is why it is the default where glass edges are exposed rather than held in a frame — frameless balustrades, glass fins, open-edge shelving, canopies, and the humidity and heat cycling of a working kitchen.
SGP is frequently offered as an acoustic upgrade. It is not one.
Acoustic damping depends on the interlayer being able to shear — to convert vibration into heat. Stiffness is precisely what prevents that. Against traffic noise, SGP typically performs a few decibels below standard PVB, and further below acoustic-grade PVB, which is engineered for the job with a softer core.
So: specify SGP for structural work and post-breakage strength. Specify acoustic PVB for noise. If a quotation offers SGP as the solution to both, ask why — and if a supplier tells you a stiffer interlayer damps sound better, that is a good reason to check the rest of the quotation carefully.
SGP costs meaningfully more than PVB. On a guard, a canopy or a structural element it is money well spent and we will recommend it. On ordinary framed safety glazing, where PVB has done the job reliably for decades, it is an upgrade with no benefit, and we will say so rather than take the larger order.

Balustrades and guards — Long Island City, Downtown Brooklyn, Hudson Yards. The clearest case. Post-breakage capacity is exactly what a guard needs, and NYC requires a safety factor of four on structural glass. Combined with heat soaking on the tempered plies.
Canopies and overhead glazing — Manhattan retail and hotel entrances. Permanently over people, on a public way, with an exposed edge and full weather exposure.
Structural fins, stairs and floors — Tribeca, SoHo, Midtown fit-outs. Where glass is carrying load rather than filling an opening.
Restaurant and commercial kitchens — Astoria and citywide. Heat and humidity cycling that would eventually reach a PVB edge.
Coastal and exposed — the Rockaways, Manhattan Beach, the Shore. Wind-borne debris requirements and permanently damp edges both point the same way.
