Acid Etched Glass in Detail

Acid etching — acid washing — treats the glass surface chemically, converting it from polished to a fine, even satin. The finish is part of the glass. It cannot peel, wear through or scratch off in the way an applied film can.

The result is characteristically uniform. Where sandblasting leaves a coarser, more open texture with slight variation, acid etching produces a consistent surface across the whole sheet — which matters on a run of panels that will be seen together, where variation between adjacent pieces is immediately obvious.

Why the Smooth Surface Matters

This is the practical reason to choose etched over blasted, and it is rarely explained.

A blasted surface is microscopically rough and open. Skin oils, grease and dirt sit in that texture and are difficult to remove, so a blasted door or shower screen shows handprints and keeps showing them.

An etched surface is far smoother. It holds less, releases more easily, and stays looking clean longer in exactly the applications where glass gets touched — doors, partitions, shower screens, balustrades at hand height.

For anything handled daily we would specify etched, and add an easy-clean coating on top. On a shower screen, where the combination of hard water and handling is at its worst, that coating is worth having.

Single or Double Sided

Etching one face leaves the other polished. That is the normal specification: the smooth face goes outward where it will be cleaned, the etched face inward.

Double-sided etching gives the same appearance from both directions and a softer overall look, at more cost. It suits free-standing panels and partitions seen from both sides.

Order of Operations

The glass is cut to final size and etched before any heat treatment. As with all tempered glass, nothing can be cut, drilled or worked afterwards — so hinge positions, handle holes and notches must be settled before the sheet goes into the process.

Etched glass can then be tempered or laminated normally, which is what allows it to be used in shower enclosures, doors and partitions where safety glazing is required.

The Substrate Question

Etching a standard clear sheet produces a satin finish with the faint green of ordinary float glass still present — more noticeable on thicker glass. Etching low-iron glass produces a genuinely white, neutral finish.

Where the etched glass sits against white stone, white tiling or a pale interior, that difference is visible and worth paying for. Where it is a bathroom window nobody studies, it is not.

Where Acid Etched Glass Is Specified

These describe the kind of work each area brings rather than any specific client project.

Shower enclosures — Upper East Side, Dyker Heights, Manhattan Beach, Todt Hill. High-end bathrooms wanting privacy without losing light. Etched low-iron against pale stone, with an easy-clean coating.

Office and meeting room partitions — Tribeca, Midtown, Boerum Hill, Downtown Brooklyn. Etched bands or full panels, where consistency across a long run of glass matters. The uniformity of etching is the reason it wins here over blasting.

Doors and entrance screens — brownstone districts, apartment lobbies. Handled constantly, which is precisely the argument for the smoother finish.

Retail and hospitality — SoHo, Williamsburg, Astoria. Masked etching for logos and patterns, where a permanent finish is wanted rather than applied vinyl.
