A new service from Alex GC: made-to-measure aluminum-frame glass doors for kitchens, bars and built-ins.
The short version. Alex GC now makes custom cabinet doors in a slim aluminum profile with glass, for kitchens, bars, pantries and built-ins. Each door is made to the size of your cabinet opening, with the glass and the frame finish you choose.
We have framed glass in aluminum for years: storefronts, office partitions, shower enclosures, interior doors. Cabinet doors are the same craft at a smaller scale, and clients and designers have been asking us for them. We now offer them as a service of their own.
The door is simple to describe. A narrow aluminum frame runs around a single piece of glass. There is no wide wood stile and rail, so almost the whole door is glass and the frame reads as a fine line. It suits upper kitchen cabinets, tall pantry and display cabinets, bars, and built-in units in living and dining rooms.
The trade-off is that a slim frame shows every error. A door that is a little out of size, or a pair that does not meet evenly, is obvious at once. That is why these doors are made to measure and not bought from a shelf.
The glass decides how the cabinet looks and how much of its contents you see:
Glass in a cabinet door should be safety glass: tempered or laminated. We will show you physical samples, because glass never looks the same on a screen as it does against your cabinet interior and your lighting.
On a recent project in an apartment on the Upper East Side we made two pairs of tall cabinet doors: slim black aluminum frames with translucent decorative glass, set into dark wood built-in cabinets above a stone counter. The plates and bottles inside read as soft shapes behind the glass.

We keep a gallery of kitchen cabinet ideas on Houzz. Open it here: Kitchen cabinets gallery on Houzz.
We work with homeowners, kitchen designers, millworkers and contractors. If your cabinetmaker is building the boxes, we can supply the doors to fit them.
A cabinet door made of a narrow aluminum frame around one piece of glass or mirror. Because the frame is thin, almost the whole door is glass.
Often, yes. The doors are made to the size of each opening, so they can replace existing doors on sound cabinet boxes. We check the cabinet and the hinge positions before making them.
Clear, frosted, acid-etched, tinted, patterned or decorative glass, or mirror. It should be tempered or laminated safety glass.
Aluminum is stiffer for its size and does not swell or warp with kitchen humidity, so the frame can be much thinner and a tall door stays straight.
Yes. We can supply and install the doors on cabinets built by your millworker or cabinet supplier.
