1209 Vine Street is the old Jarvis Building in Callowhill, on the north side of the Vine Street Expressway a block from the Rail Park. The prewar loft building was renovated and extended as part of the Vine Street Apartments development, with commercial space at street level. Alex GC provided the aluminium storefront doors for the ground floor: black-finished double doors with glazed transoms above, set into the new openings in the street wall.
The ground-floor openings are tall, so each entrance is built as one frame with two parts: a pair of medium-stile aluminium doors at the bottom and a single fixed transom lite above, carrying the glass up to the head of the opening. A pair of doors gives a clear width for move-ins, deliveries and accessible entry with one leaf, and the transom keeps the daylight that a solid header would throw away. A second opening has a single door under the same kind of transom. The glass is insulated low-E, which matters on a glazed entrance that faces an open expressway cut with nothing to shade it.
The doors carry full-height black ladder pulls on the exterior, one per leaf, with the lock cylinder in the meeting stile and an aluminium threshold at the sill. Long pulls suit a pair of tall doors: they can be reached at any height and they give the entrance a strong vertical line against the dark frames.
The photographs show the doors as they went in, before the surrounding finishes. Each opening was wrapped with a self-adhered air and water barrier membrane before the frame was set — the blue membrane visible around the jambs — so the storefront frame is sealed back to the building’s weather barrier rather than only caulked to the cladding. The weathering-steel panels beside the entrance close over that membrane afterwards. On a street-level entrance, that sequence is what keeps water out of the wall at the jambs and sill. See waterproofing for how we detail openings.
Philadelphia is part of our regular service area. Storefront and entrance packages for projects there are measured, supplied and coordinated with the site contractor the same way as our New York work.
Photographed in November 2024, during construction; the low-E labels are still on the glass.
