Scope of Work

A powder room near 12th Avenue and 38th Street in Borough Park, finished with a floating white marble vanity, an integrated marble sink and a brushed-gold faucet. Above it, Alex GC supplied and installed a single piece of antique mirror, cut to fill the niche from one wall to the other and from the marble backsplash upward.

What Antique Mirror Is

Antique mirror is new mirror that has been deliberately aged. The reflective coating is distressed during manufacture so that the surface carries a pattern, anything from a light overall haze to heavy dark veining. The pattern chosen here is a fine, even speckle across the whole sheet. Every sheet is finished by hand, so no two are identical. We supply sixteen patterns in silver, bronze and grey; see the full range on our antique mirror page.

Why It Works in This Room

A powder room is small, and a plain clear mirror the full width of a wall can feel clinical in it. The speckle softens the reflection: you still see yourself and the room, but through a texture that reads more like a finish than a looking glass. It also picks up the materials around it. The grey flecks sit comfortably beside the veining of the marble, and the warm tone in the pattern answers the brushed gold of the faucet.

In the photographs the mirror reflects the hallway outside, with its arched opening and staircase, so the room borrows depth from the space beyond the door.

One Piece, Wall to Wall

The mirror fills the niche completely, with no frame and no visible gap at the sides. That only works if the glass is cut to the opening as it really is. Two walls that look parallel rarely are, so we measure the width at the top, the middle and the bottom, and the height at both sides, and cut the mirror to those figures with a small, even margin. The bottom edge is kept just clear of the marble so that water sitting on the backsplash does not stand against the edge of the mirror.

Installation

The mirror rests on supports at its bottom edge and is bonded to the wall. The blue tape in the photographs holds it in position while the adhesive cures and protects the edges and the painted walls; it comes off at close-out. Finished photographs will replace these.
