95 Greene Street, SoHo — Custom LED Backlit Mirrors, Fabricated and Installed
Scope of Work
A loft apartment at 95 Greene Street, in the SoHo Cast Iron Historic District between Spring and Prince, with its bathrooms clad floor to ceiling in Carrara marble. Alex GC fabricated and installed the custom mirrors for it: a wide backlit mirror over the double vanity and a full-height mirror for the narrow powder room, each with LED lighting behind the glass. The mirrors, the backing, the LED channels and the installation are all ours; the electrical supply to each mirror was brought to the wall by the electrician.
How a Backlit Mirror Is Built
The mirror is cut to the exact opening in the marble — there is no frame to hide a gap, so the glass has to meet the stone cleanly on all four sides. Behind it, the LED strip runs in a channel around the perimeter of a backing panel that stands the mirror off the wall by the depth of the channel. The light washes the marble around the glass rather than shining at the person in front of it, which is why a backlit mirror flatters a room in a way a surface-mounted fixture never does. The strip is a continuous run, so there are no hot spots at the corners, and the diffuser softens it to an even line.
The Two Mirrors
The vanity mirror is the wide one over the double basin. It fills the wall between the marble returns and sits on the marble splash, with the glow reading as a soft edge on every side. The wall-mounted faucets and the recessed flush plate in the reflection are the kind of detail that decides where a mirror can and cannot be drilled; this one is adhesive-set on its backing, with nothing through the face.
The powder-room mirror is full height in a marble alcove barely wider than a door. The photograph shows it mid-installation: the LED channel already lit, which is how the installer checks the mirror is centred and the light line is even before the adhesive takes, and temporary clips holding the glass to the backing while it cures. Once set, the clips come off and the glass floats in the stone.
Installation in Finished Marble
Both mirrors went in after the stone was finished, which is the order that protects the marble but leaves no margin. The backing is fixed to the wall first and levelled; the mirror is dry-fitted, the light checked, then bonded. The power feed comes through the wall behind the backing to a driver that stays accessible, so the strip can be serviced without disturbing the glass.
