Glass Partitions: The Question Nobody Asks Until Afterwards

Glass partitions are specified for light and openness, and the thing that disappoints people afterwards is almost never the look. It is the sound.

Most people assume a glass wall gives a private meeting room. A single-glazed frameless partition does not. It gives visual separation and modest acoustic separation — enough that a conversation is not distracting, not enough that it is confidential. If the room is for confidential conversations, that has to be designed for.

Where the Sound Actually Goes

Three paths, and the glass is only one of them.

Through the glass. Improved by mass, by double glazing with a wide cavity, and by laminated acoustic glass.

Through the joints. A butt-jointed frameless partition has a silicone joint between panels, and that joint is a direct path. So is the gap under the door. A meeting room with an excellent glass specification and a 10mm gap under the door is not a private room.

Over the top and under the floor. This is the big one and it is invisible. A partition running to a suspended ceiling with an open plenum above it has a clear route into the next room. The partition has to be sealed to the slab above, not to the ceiling tile, or the glass specification is irrelevant.

We raise this at survey because it decides the whole design, and because it cannot be fixed afterwards without taking the ceiling down.

Single or Double Glazed

Single glazed frameless is the cleanest look and the right answer for open-plan division, corridors, reception screens and anywhere the point is light rather than privacy.

Double glazed systems use two panes in a slim frame with an air gap, and deliver meaningfully better acoustic separation. They cost more, they are thicker, and the frame is visible — which some people dislike and which is the price of the performance.

Doors Are the Weak Point

Whatever the partition achieves, the door usually undoes. A frameless glass door on patch fittings has gaps around it by design. A sliding door has a larger gap still.

Where acoustic separation genuinely matters, the door needs seals and a drop seal at the threshold, and that usually means a framed door rather than a frameless one. It is a trade-off between appearance and performance and it should be made deliberately.

Demountable Systems

Worth considering in a leased space. Demountable partitions can be taken down and reconfigured, and in some cases treated as furniture rather than a fixed improvement — which can matter at the end of a lease. They cost more up front and the joints are visible.

Partition Work Across the City

These describe the kind of work each area brings rather than any specific client project.

Office fit-outs — Tribeca, Midtown, Downtown Brooklyn, Boerum Hill. The largest share of this work. The recurring decision is where to spend: frameless single glazing through the open plan, double glazed where conversations need to be private.

Loft conversions — SoHo, Williamsburg, Greenpoint. Dividing large open volumes without blocking the windows, frequently in buildings where the ceiling is the underside of the slab — which removes the plenum problem entirely and makes good acoustics much easier.

Medical and professional — citywide. Where confidentiality is a requirement rather than a preference, the specification starts from the acoustic target and works backwards.

Retail and hospitality — SoHo, Astoria, Williamsburg. Screens, vestibules and back-of-house division, where durability and cleaning matter more than acoustics.
