61 Avenue U, Brooklyn — Glass Terrace Railings with LED Lighting and Cortizo Windows
Scope of Work
A building at 61 Avenue U with terraces that needed guarding and a facade that needed new windows. Alex GC supplied and installed frameless tempered-glass railings on the terraces, with an LED accent light integrated into the railing base so the glass edge glows green after dark, and the aluminum window systems on Cortizo profile.
Frameless Glass on a Terrace
A frameless railing is the version of a glass guard that hides the most and asks the most. There is no post and no top rail to lean on structurally, so the glass panel itself is the guard and the base fixing is doing all the work. That means thicker tempered glass, a base detail engineered for the cantilever, and edges finished to a standard that will be looked at closely because nothing covers them. It is the right choice when the view is the point and the client will pay for the glass and the base rather than for a rail; see railing systems for where each option fits and what New York requires of each.
LED in the Railing
The LED lighting sits at the base of the railing and lights the bottom edge of each panel, so the glass carries the light up through its edge. It is a small detail that changes the building at night: the terraces read as lines of green light from the street.
Cortizo
The aluminum framing on the project is Cortizo, a Spanish system we fabricate in-house. We used the same system on 5-13 47th Road in Long Island City.
