A private house in Jamaica Estates, Queens, with a new brick garage at the back of the property. Alex GC provided the door to the garage and its finish: a paneled door with a matching fixed side panel, painted in a custom patina that gives it the depth and warmth of old hardwood against the pale brick.
The opening is filled by one frame holding two parts: the door leaf and a narrower fixed panel beside it. Both are divided the same way, with a glazed lite at the top and a stack of flat horizontal panels below, so the two read as one composition. The glass at the top brings daylight into the garage without putting the interior on view from the yard, and the solid panels below keep the door secure and private.
The finish is what makes the door. A patina finish is built up by hand in layers, a base color and then translucent glazes worked over it, so the surface has the variation of tone that aged timber has: darker in the recesses, lighter where a hand would have worn it. A single sprayed color cannot do that. The result here is a deep red-brown that looks like mahogany and is tuned to the brick beside it.
Because it is mixed and applied for the job, a patina can be matched to something that already exists on the house: a front door, window frames, a gate. That is usually why owners ask for it.
The first photograph shows the finished door. The second shows the garage during construction, with the brickwork complete and the openings still empty. Measuring from the finished masonry, and not from the drawing, is what lets a door like this sit in its opening with an even margin all round.
