Scope of Work

Replacement of the main entrance of a residential building at 168-172 Ocean Avenue in Jersey City, New Jersey. The new entrance is a black aluminum frame with a full-glass door, a narrow glass sidelight on each side and a glass transom above, set into the existing opening behind the building's stone columns.

A Modern Entrance in an Old Portico

The building has a classical stone portico: two columns with carved capitals on pedestals, under a stone lintel. The new entrance does not try to imitate it. It is a plain black frame with large clear glass, set back in the opening, so the stonework stays the feature and the lobby behind is visible from the street. A black metal surround closes the gap between the new frame and the old masonry at the head and sides.

Door, Sidelights and Transom

The door is a single aluminum leaf with glass almost to its full height and a long vertical pull handle. The sidelights and the transom bring daylight into the lobby and let residents see who is outside before they open the door. The intercom panel is mounted beside the door, at the sidelight.

A building entrance is the hardest-working door in the property: it is opened hundreds of times a day, has to close and lock itself every time, and has to work with the intercom and the electric release. See our building entrance doors page for how we specify closers, locks and hardware for this use.

Replacing an Entrance in an Occupied Building

Residents need to get in and out every day, so an entrance replacement is planned to keep the building secure throughout: the new frame and door are made to field measurements before the old entrance is touched, and the changeover is done so that the building has a locking door at the end of the day.
