A commercial storefront on Central Avenue in Jersey City, New Jersey. Alex GC handled it from start to finish: design, material and installation. The street level of the building is glazed in black aluminum curtain wall, with medium-stile commercial aluminum entrance doors set into it and insulated glass units throughout.

The glazing runs as one continuous band of tall lites between slim black mullions, from a stone base up to the panel cladding above. Using curtain wall framing here, in place of a lighter storefront section, gives deeper, stiffer mullions, so the lites can be taller and wider and the framing reads as thin vertical lines from the street. The black finish frames the glass against the light cladding and the brick beside it.
The entrances are commercial aluminum doors with a medium stile. The stile is the vertical frame member of the door leaf: a medium stile is wider and stronger than a narrow one, with more room for locks and hardware, while still leaving a tall clear lite of glass. It is the stile we recommend most often for a busy commercial entrance. For the differences, see our guide to commercial door design.
The doors are fitted with electric strikes. An electric strike replaces the fixed strike plate in the frame: when it receives a signal from a buzzer, intercom or card reader, it releases the latch so the door can be pushed open without a key. The door stays locked the rest of the time, and people inside can always leave by turning the handle.
The handles are lever handles mounted back to back, one inside and one outside on the same door. A lever is easy to operate with one hand and without a tight grip.
All of the glazing is insulated glass: two lites sealed around a spacer with an air space between them. Compared with single glass it holds heat in during winter, keeps the interior cooler in summer and cuts street noise, which matters on a commercial avenue.
Photographed at the end of installation, with the glass labels still on.
