Scope of Work

Windows for the new multi-story building at 1763 Amsterdam Avenue in Hamilton Heights, Manhattan. The windows are made by Crystal. Alex GC supplied them and managed their installation. The building is finished in a light stucco, and the dark-framed windows run in vertical lines up every side of it, front, rear and courtyard.

The Windows

Each opening on the upper floors holds one tall unit in a dark frame, divided by a horizontal rail into an upper and a lower light. On most openings the unit also has a louvered section at the bottom, built into the same frame, which serves the heating and cooling unit behind it. Making the louver part of the window means one frame, one perimeter joint and one line of sealant per opening, instead of a separate grille cut into the wall beside it.

The same unit is repeated at the same size from floor to floor. On a plain stucco wall the windows are the whole pattern of the facade, so their alignment, floor over floor, is what the eye checks first.

Crystal is the manufacturer; we are a dealer for their windows. More on our Crystal windows page.

Supply and Installation Management

On this project our role was in two parts. The first was supply: taking the window schedule from the drawings, confirming sizes and configurations against the openings as built, ordering from the manufacturer and getting the units to the site in the order the floors needed them.

The second was managing the installation: planning the sequence, checking that openings were ready, overseeing the setting, anchoring and sealing of the units, and following up on anything that needed correcting before the exterior finish was closed around the frames. On a building with this many identical openings, most of the work of getting a good result is in that coordination.

We also made a soundproof interior window for the church in this building. That work has its own page: 1763 Amsterdam Avenue: soundproof interior window.
