Scope of Work

Balcony railings for a house on Runyan Avenue in Deal, on the New Jersey shore. The railing is a stainless steel post system supplied by Q-railing, with a round stainless top rail and low-iron glass panels held between the posts. It runs along straight balcony edges and around a curved balcony that looks over the terrace, the lawn and the tennis court.

Stainless Steel by Q-railing

Q-railing is a specialist manufacturer of stainless steel and glass railing systems. In our experience it is the highest quality railing product available: posts, base flanges, glass clamps and handrail fittings machined to fit one another, so the finished railing is tight and consistent from one post to the next.

Each post stands on a round base flange fixed to the top of the balcony slab. Glass clamps on the posts grip the panels at the sides, and the top rail ties the posts together. A house close to the ocean is a hard place for metal, with salt in the air all year, which makes the grade and finish of the stainless steel matter. We used the same manufacturer for the glass guards at the UGI Utilities office in Bethlehem.

Low-Iron Glass

The panels are low-iron glass. Ordinary clear glass has a green tint that shows most at the edges and when you look through it at an angle, which is how a balcony railing is usually seen. Low-iron glass has far less of it, so the panels are close to colorless and the view through them is clean. On a railing whose whole purpose is not to block the view, that is worth having. We explain the difference in low-iron versus standard clear glass.

The Curved Balcony

One balcony follows a curve. A post system handles this with straight glass panels set as short facets between closely spaced posts, so the railing follows the arc of the slab without curved glass. The top rail carries the line around the bend.
