Scope of Work

A sunroom at the back of a private house in Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn. A covered corner of the patio, next to the pool, was enclosed with aluminum bifold glass doors on its two open sides: a three-panel set on the short side and a five-panel set on the long side. The frames are finished in brown to go with the house's existing windows and French doors.

How the Bifold Doors Work

A bifold door is a row of glazed panels hinged to one another. The panels run on a track and fold together like a concertina, stacking at the side of the opening, so nearly the whole width can be opened. One panel in each set works as an everyday door with a lever handle and a key lock, so the owner can walk in and out without folding the whole set.

In the photographs the end panel on the short side is open and the multi-point locking gear can be seen on its edge. Closed, the panels read as a wall of full-height glass.

A Room That Opens to the Pool

The point of using bifold doors on a sunroom is that the room can change with the weather. With the doors folded back, the space is an open, covered part of the patio beside the pool. With the doors closed, it is a glazed room that can be used in the cooler months. The glass is insulated, and the slim frames keep the view of the yard from inside the house.

See our pergola and sunroom page and patio doors for the options.

Fitting Doors to an Existing Structure

The doors were fitted into an opening formed by the existing structure: the house wall on one side, a beam overhead and a corner post. Bifold doors need a level, straight track and a head that will not deflect, because the panels hang and fold along it; the frame is set and shimmed true before the panels are hung and adjusted so that every panel closes on its seals.
