In short: Alex Glass Construction measures, engineers, fabricates and installs glass railings in Brooklyn: frameless base-shoe railings in laminated tempered glass, stainless steel or aluminum post systems with tempered glass infill, spigot railings, and glass stair guards. Every balcony is measured to its finished walls and the code gap, the railing is drawn and approved before fabrication, and our crews install it. Survey and quote are free. Glass railings in Brooklyn

Brooklyn railing work is balconies on new buildings, roof decks on brownstones and new houses, and the terraces of the waterfront. 17 Dodworth Street in Bushwick has frameless glass balcony and roof railings on a new condominium; 114 Lexington Avenue has glass balcony railings on every floor; 61 Avenue U has glass terrace railings with LED lighting; 1505 Emmons Avenue on the Sheepshead Bay waterfront was mocked up on site as a spigot-mounted wave railing. We are reviewing nineteen balcony railings for a new building at 435 East 21st Street in Flatbush now; the measuring and the corrections are written up in how we measure a glass balcony railing.

For developers the railing is part of the facade package with the windows and the storefront; see glass contractor for builders and developers in Brooklyn.

Code, measurement and approvals

The New York City Building Code requires a guard at least 42 inches above the finished walking surface wherever the drop is 30 inches or more, resisting a 200-pound concentrated load and a 50-pound-per-foot uniform load, with no opening a 4-inch sphere passes through, and laminated glass where there is no top rail. A new railing on a roof deck, terrace or balcony is filed by the architect or engineer with the Department of Buildings; we supply the shop drawings, the glass specification and the system load data. Every balcony is measured to its finished walls, with a 2-inch gap between the end post and the wall for the base plate, and the fabricator’s drawings are checked against the field before anything is cut.

How we measure a balcony and why the railing is smaller than the slab is explained in how we measure a glass balcony railing.

Questions People Ask

Who installs glass railings in Brooklyn?

Alex Glass Construction measures, engineers, fabricates and installs glass balcony, terrace, roof-deck and stair railings in Brooklyn. Call 929-235-1233 or send photos of the balcony or stair.

How high must a glass railing be?

At least 42 inches from the finished walking surface for a balcony, terrace or roof deck in New York City, 36 inches for a residential stair handrail, with no opening a 4-inch sphere can pass through, and it must resist a 200-pound concentrated load.

Tempered or laminated glass?

Tempered infill between posts; laminated tempered glass for frameless guards without a top rail, so a broken lite stays in place as the code requires.

How long does a glass railing take?

Four to six weeks from approval to installation: one to two weeks for drawings, two to three weeks for glass and metal, and one to several days on site.

Do you do railings on existing balconies?

Yes. We check what the slab or parapet can take and choose the fixing (top-mounted, side-mounted or on posts) the structure allows.

Do you install glass railings on new buildings in Brooklyn?

Yes, as part of the facade package or on their own: post-and-glass systems on multi-family balconies, frameless base-shoe on condominiums and roof decks, measured balcony by balcony against the finished walls.
