Standard doors are branded doors: a system-house frame, named rollers or hinges, a named multipoint or commercial lock, a named closer, named glass. Reynaers and Cortizo terrace and sliding doors, Alutech and Everest balcony doors, Crystal 1460 with its full hardware, Pella Lifestyle and Andersen 400 patio doors, Marvin Elevate, Aluplast’s deeper uPVC doors, and commercial entrances built on Kawneer-equivalent storefront with Norton closers and Adams Rite locks. It is the line most of our door work is in and the line a specification can name part by part.

The test is the same as for windows — whose components are in it — but on a door the hardware is the product. A standard-line sliding door runs on rollers rated for its panel weight by a maker who publishes the rating; a standard terrace door has a multipoint from Roto, Fapim or Siegenia and a lever from Hoppe or FSB; a standard commercial door has a Norton or LCN closer, an Adams Rite or Corbin lock and continuous or heavy-duty butt hinges. The frame is a system profile with published sections and test reports. Because each part is named, the door can be specified, replaced part by part, and approved by a board or an architect.

Panel size and weight. Standard sliders carry panels of 200–300 kg; a 10 × 9 foot panel is routine. Swing doors carry oversized leaves — the East 71st Street in-swing doors are the type.
Named, replaceable hardware. Rollers, gearing, locks and closers you can identify, rate and buy again in ten years.
Sightlines and finishes. Slim aluminium frames in any RAL or anodised finish; wood interiors in the clad lines; matching windows and doors from one system so the elevation reads as one.
Glass options. Laminated for security and noise, tinted and low-iron, the coatings of the window line.
Documentation. Test reports for air, water and structural performance; the paperwork a board or an architect asks for.
Every terrace, balcony and patio door on a house or an apartment someone will live in. Every public commercial entrance: the 300 East 50th Street entry doors, the Kings Plaza storefront, Grand Prix Custom. Every door that has to match a standard-line window system. The four-panel multi-slide on Ocean Avenue is a standard-line door; so is the Everest balcony door on 2518 Ocean Avenue.
Lift-slide and minimal-frame sliders (Reynaers Hi-Finity, Cortizo COR Vision), pivot entrance doors, leaves past the catalogue maximum, doors in polished stainless or bronze cladding, period cremone bolts on modern multipoints, motorised operation, and any door drawn for one building. The premium line.
Doors fail at the bottom. A standard-line terrace or sliding door comes with a thermally broken aluminium sill that has a weep path and a proper interior upstand, and the frame is designed to sit on a sill pan we form on site so any water that gets past the door drains out rather than into the floor. On a roof terrace or a balcony over a finished room that detail is the whole job: the East 71st Street terrace doors and the Tower House Marvin door were both set on a sill pan and membrane-flashed into the wall before a single interior finish went in. Low-profile and flush thresholds are available in the standard line for accessibility and for the look; they need a drained sill outside and we say so.
Standard-line doors take the accessories a house or a building needs without improvisation: sliding or retractable insect screens sized for the frame, multipoint locks keyed alike with the front door, restrictors and limiters where a child could reach a balcony, and on commercial doors, electrified strikes, maglocks, intercom and card readers wired through the frame rather than surface-mounted. On a co-op or condo the board’s standard usually names the lock and the screen; on a storefront the tenant’s security system decides the hardware. The reason the aluminium door lines in this tier are the same systems as the window lines is that an elevation reads as one only if the frames match: the same sightline on the terrace door as on the casement beside it, the same colour and gloss, the same glass tint, the same hardware finish. A standard-line specification therefore usually starts from the windows and takes the doors from the same system — Cortizo doors with Cortizo windows, Everest doors with Everest windows — and where a house mixes brands, as the Coleridge Street house mixes Pella windows with an aluminium side door, the colour and the glass are chosen so the eye does not stop at the join. We draw the whole elevation, doors and windows together, before either is ordered.
By system and part: the profile series, the roller or hinge and its rating, the lock and closer by maker, the glass make-up, the threshold and the finish. Fabricated aluminium doors run six to twelve weeks from approved shop drawings; Pella, Andersen and Marvin lines three to eight; commercial storefront doors two to six. Panels of 200–300 kg are routine — around 10 by 9 feet per panel — in two-, three- and four-panel configurations. Larger panels and lift-slides move into the premium line.
